CHARLOTTE DOUGLASS and Niamh Wilson: Practitioners and Advocates perspectives on Domestic Violence in Ireland

Charlotte Douglass has worked in the area of domestic abuse for 10 years and is the only person in Ireland to be a SafeLives UK qualified Young Person Domestic Violence Advocate (YPDVA). As a survivor of domestic abuse, Charlotte uses her experience to develop and deliver training to community and statutory organisations. Charlotte is a freelance consultant on the area of domestic violence and young people experiencing domestic violence and co-researcher with Niamh Wilson developing an educational framework and qualification for the Irish domestic violence sector .She currently works as a Domestic Violence Specialist at Longford Women’s Link in Longford, Ireland and specialises in working with women and young people who experience abuse.
Niamh Wilson worked as a domestic violence advocate for almost 30 years advocating for the rights of individual women and children and wider social change. She has worked as a frontline service provider and held roles as an educator, trainer, facilitator, researcher and community development worker in supporting community responses to violence against women. Niamh left frontline domestic violence work in 2016 to pursue a PhD study into the education needs of domestic violence advocates. She has a long held interest in the role of education as a core element in the architecture supporting domestic violence responses and in 2014 completed an MEd in Adult and Community Education exploring education frameworks for domestic violence organisations in four countries. Niamh is currently working with a group of colleagues from within the domestic violence sector in an action research project focused on establishing an education and learning framework for domestic violence workers in Ireland.

Dr. Muna Muhammad Odeh holds a BSc in Biology from The American University, Washington D.C., obtained a Masters degree with focus on the sociology of health from Manchester University, UK and a PhD in Education from the Federal University of Sao Carlos in Brazil. Muna has work experience with the United Nations University (2003-2006); she is 2016 Fellow FAIMER, Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research, and trained in Leadership in Mental Health with Sangath, India, 2018. Between Nov 2019 and Feb 2020 she was Visiting Scholar with the
National Men´s Health Centre, Institute of Technology Carlow, Ireland.
Based at the University of Brasilia, Brazil, Muna has been involved in research in men's health in Brazil since 2012 looking at patterns of use of healthcare services in relation to institutional and sociocultural barriers. More recently worked on a two-year pilot project that implemented a participatory training in men's health for service providers in primary health care settings. She also focuses on mental health and community education in teaching, research and outreach programmes.
